Afterlife Exists says Top Brain Surgeon.

This is the kind of article which ultimately will lead people not to believe in God. Let me explain why.

When the opinion of a scientist or scientists (using only empirical methods) are held up as sources of knowledge on nearly every topic, there is an implicit message that comes along with it. Modern science reaches into all areas of reality. "If a scientist believes it, well then, it must be true!" is the type of phenomenon our Western culture experiences today. However, as I have repeated on this blog many times, the domain of modern science does not even validate its own existence by its own method. How can it validate all areas of knowledge, including, the religious experience?

An experience like this to a scientist will remain just that...an experience. It has a mechanical cause in the brain and as long as the mechanical cause of any "deemed supernatural event" is considered sufficient, there will be no reason to postulate a supernatural cause. That is...prior to teleology.

I leave you with this quote from Descartes:

Consider how Descartes says that mechanical analysis of causes should replace by the metaphysical or classical method. Why? Because it is useful to do so. Since when is the utility of an approach make it true?

This may seem like a bit of an overreaction to a simple article stating something positive about possible 'afterlife', but I just wish to make the point that while it is a newsworthy item, scientists (in the original Aristotelian sense--those who seek knowledge) should try to amend any confusion that might arise from an implication that the scientific method is the source of all our knowledge. All knowledge originates in the sense but it does not stop there.

The average joe is smart enough to figure out that a drug can cause the same experience of 'afterlife' in the senses. Some research has suggested that the brain releases a sort of pain killing drug during death which also causes hallucinations. Should we assume there is always only a mechanical cause or can we claim consistent goal oriented behavior, the very basis of our ability to predict to begin with?

  1. So what ideas of the afterlife mentioned would have any ground to stand on? You seem to dismiss any idea of the afterlife being experienced on earth, which is hard for people to hold onto - the idea that its only faith based.

    1. I did not mean to make a claim on whether his experience was of supernatural origin or not because it may very well be. In writing this article I was trying to avoid both a rationalistic and fideistic perspective of the experience. The idea of the afterlife does very much stand on a combination of faith and experience (even this example may be one such experience)...however, what I'm trying to clarify is that this faith should not be attributed to a modern scientifically validated supernatural experience...because there can be no such thing. With miracles I believe that they may or may not have a mechanical (natural cause observable by the SCI method) but that they will always have a supernatural cause (which is not observable).

      The author is not claiming there was a 'validated supernatural experience'...but I can guarantee that the minds of many readers will go straight to that mode of thinking--or hoping. He is a scientist so he must understand that this is of supernatural origin based on his observations as a scientist. Nothing can escape the jaws of observation! I just want to reiterated that other causes exist besides the mechanical/observable/manipulable.

      Miracles (including this experience) may or may not have a natural explanation but they always have a supernatural origin. The problem is for many people finding the natural explanation automatically means there was no supernatural explanation. It seems reasonable to think that God could suspend the laws of nature and cause objects to act in unnatural and unrepeatable ways and of course there would still be a mechanical explanation—“That rock’s atoms disappeared and then reappeared in another location.” Therefore we should not confuse something having a natural cause with having a natural explanation or account.

      The reason that is important is because, yes, call me crazy, but I'm suggesting that it is theoretically possible to take drugs and have a supernatural experience. I just don't want there to be confusion in that respect.
